Crowns and Bridges
| Crowns and Bridges are used to optimize the strength and the structure of a tooth. Although their main purpose is to maintain a tooth and to restore proper function to the dental arch, they are also aesthetically pleasing. Advances in dental technology, has allowed for more cosmetically appealing dentistry to be performed in conjuction with prevention and dental health. The materials today have taken on a scope of their own, crowns and bridges can be as natural looking as a virgin tooth. While crowns cover or “cap” one individual tooth, its function is to restore or replace a badly broken down or decayed tooth. In cases where the decay has affected the root of the tooth, root canal therapy may be necessary in order to place the crown and restore the tooth. |

A bridge is similar in nature and function as a crown however it involves covering two or more teeth on either side of a space in a dental arch. A bridge would be recommended if the teeth on either side of the space have large fillings or are badly decayed and are in need of a crown. The bridge would cover both existing teeth, plus a tooth would now be present to take the place of the space, all units are connected together just ike a “bridge”. This would restore proper function, however if the teeth on either side of the space are perfectly functional an implant to fill the existing space would be recommended. |
